PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULE
OF THE COUNTY CANVASSING BOARD
FOR THE DECEMBER 5, 2017
HOUSE DISTRICT 72 SPECIAL PRIMARY
The County Canvassing Board for the December 5, 2017 House District 72 Special (Democratic) Primary is scheduled to meet as follows:
Friday, November 17, 9:00 a.m. – Logic and accuracy testing of a random sample of the tabulating equipment and reporting software to be fielded during early voting and on election day.
Tuesday, November 28, 8:30 a.m. – Initial vote-by-mail canvass.
Monday, December 4, 9:00 a.m. – Canvass of vote-by-mail ballots continues.
Tuesday, December 5, 5:00 p.m. – Final vote-by-mail ballot canvass.
Thursday, December 7, 5:00 p.m. – Provisional ballot canvass.
Friday, December 15, 5:00 p.m. – 10-day canvass and certification and random selection of precinct for the post-election certification audit.
Tuesday, December 19, 9:00 a.m. – Manual post-election certification audit.
Ballot opening and tabulating will begin following the initial vote-by-mail canvass. However, no results will be released until after the polls close on December 5.
All meetings will take place at the Office of the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections, 1st floor, 2001 Adams Lane, Sarasota, Florida, and, in accordance with the Sunshine Law of Florida, are open to the public.
In the event the canvassing board needs additional time to canvass and there is not time to advertise any change in the above schedule, pursuant to §102.141(2), Florida Statutes, notice of change will be posted at www.SarasotaVotes.com.
Pursuant to §101.68(2) (c) 2, Florida Statutes, if any elector or candidate present believes that a vote-by-mail ballot is illegal due to a defect apparent on the voter’s certificate, he or she may, at any time before the ballot is removed from the envelope, file with the canvassing board a protest against the canvass of that ballot, specifying the precinct, the ballot, and the reason he or she believes the ballot to be illegal. A challenge based upon a defect in the voter’s certificate may not be accepted after the ballot has been removed from the mailing envelope.
Unopened vote-by-mail ballots received prior to 8 a.m. on Tuesday, November 28 will be available for inspection from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on November 28. Thereafter and thru 8 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, unopened ballots will be available for inspection from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. daily, following the day of receipt, excluding weekends. Vote-by-mail ballots will be opened and processed immediately following each public inspection period. Any elector wishing to inspect unopened vote-by-mail ballots received after 8 a.m. on December 5 must be present throughout the day as those ballots will be opened and processed upon receipt.
Note: §286.0105, Florida Statutes, states that if a person decides to appeal any decision by a board, agency, or commission with respect to any matter considered at a meeting or hearing, he or she will need a record of the proceedings, and that, for such purpose, he or she may need to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made, which record includes the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is to be based.
